Interview: Director Daphné Baiwir discusses documentary ’King on Screen’ [Fantastic Fest]

In 1976, Brian de Palma directed Carrie, the first novel and adaptation of Stephen King’s work. Since then, more than 50 directors have adapted the master of horror’s books, in more than 80 films and series, making him now the most adapted author still alive in the world. Although a prolific writer, Stephen King is a name known to the masses, regardless of whether they are avid readers or not. In fact, for many, the first experience of Stephen King comes via one of these adaptations. This phenomena is explored within the new documentary King on Screen.

Directed by Daphné Baiwir (The Rebellious Olivia de Havilland ), King on Screen is an intimate look at the unique relationship between Stephen King’s vast body of work and the directors famous for re-imagining it for the screen.

With an ambitious fictional introduction packed with Easter eggs, references, and other winks that constant readers will find delightful, this doc is a must-see for any King-head and casual viewer alike. King on Screen gets its World Premiere this week at Fantastic Fest. The screening couldn’t be more perfectly timed as this week sees the author celebrate his 76th Birthday.

With so many adaptations to choose from, whittling it down to just a handful must have been a painstaking task. This is just one of the questions that we posed to director Daphné Baiwir when THN spoke with her ahead of the premiere.

King on Screen will debut at Fantastic Fest on Saturday 24th September with further screenings on Monday 26th September.
