Interview: Rob Schroeder discusses directorial debut ’Ultrasound’

We first caught Ultrasound on its festival run in 2021 when it screened at Arrow Video FrightFest. Directed by Rob Schroeder (his feature debut) and written by Conor Stechschulte, Ultrasound offered a mysterious slice of science-fiction to the horror heavy programme and has remained a film stuck in our unconscious.

When his car breaks down, Glen (Vincent Kartheiser) spends a strange night with a married couple (Chelsea Lopez and Bob Stephenson), which takes a bizarre twist, setting off a series of events destined to change all of their lives. At the same time in a nondescript research facility, medical professional Shannon (Breeda Wool) begins questioning her role in a bizarre experiment, fearing that she’s doing more harm than good. Elsewhere, an attractive young woman (Rainey Qualley) is feeling emotionally wrecked by a secret romantic arrangement that feels like textbook gaslighting. How these seemingly unconnected incidents converge is only part of the mind-bending mystery…

Weird, disorientating, and complex, Ultrasound compels the viewer into a fugue state, which the film’s darkly dangerous science-fiction can unfold and wrap around them. Within Ultrasound Schroeder explores uncomfortable ideas around the ability to control others through an overtly science-fiction lens, but the potential truth within the film is what makes it a harrowing watch. A hard film and idea to shake, Ultrasound will soon unnerve many more as it arrives on Digital Download from Monday 20th June.

Although Ultrasound might be Schroeder’s first feature, he has been part of the industry for a number of years, primarily working within the realm of producing. For first steps into the world of directing, Ultrasound makes a great debut. There’s so much happening on and under the surface that it benefits from multiple watches. Ahead of the release we spoke with Schroeder to get his take on the film and its creation.

Ultrasound is available on Digital Download from 20th June 2022.
