When people think of filming locations, they do not often think about Canada, often focusing their gaze on Hollywood. However, lots of famous movies have been shot in Canada, many of which you may not know were filmed there.
Mean Girls
Toronto has often been used as a replacement for some American cities and it represented Chicago for the filming of Mean Girls. The 2004 film follows Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan). She is homeschooled, but her parents move her back to America to join high school. She makes the mistake of falling in love with Aaron Samuels (acted by Jonathan Bennett), Regina George’s (acted by Rachel McAdams) ex-boyfriend. Regina is the queen bee at Candy’s new school, and she is about to make Candy’s life very difficult.
Lots of recognizable locations like the University of Toronto’s Convocation Hall and the Malvern Collegiate Institute are all featured in the film.
Titanic
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio featured in one of the biggest films ever made, Titanic, and broke several records along the way. James Cameron’s romantic drama was an instant hit as soon as it hit the theatres and continues to intrigue, particularly because it is based on a true story.
The one thing you might not know about the film is that it was shot in Halifax Nova Scotia. This is a Canadian port closest to where the ship sank. Many of the victims from the original shipwreck were buried in Halifax cemeteries, making it extremely significant to the story of Titanic.
The Last Casino
The Last Casino is a movie based on the casino game, blackjack, that has escaped a lot of people. Released in 2004, this drama has garnered a cult following, especially among people interested in the history of gambling and card counting.
The main story revolves around a professor who was banned from casinos in Quebec and Ontario. However, that does not stop him because he teaches three of his students how to count cards. They end up turning $1000 into $35,000 in 9 months.
The Last Casino is based on the movie 21, a true story of the MIT Blackjack team, which was made up of students attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who did the same thing.
The film has some serious parts, lots of humour, and a lot of focus on the game of blackjack. Blackjack remains a popular casino game to this day, and if you want to play it, check reviews of the top Canadian gambling sites. Although card counting has largely died down, the film is still a testament to what people can do if they put their minds into solving complex mathematical models.
Fifty Shades of Grey
Many parts of the blockbuster film Fifty Shades of Grey were filmed in Canada. The cast and crew would hang out in various bookshops, cafés, and local hotspots around Vancouver during filming. Other locations and attractions significant to the filming of the movie include Gastown, the University of British Columbia, Bentall 5 tower, and Hotel Vancouver.
Canada is a unique filming location because it gives producers a diverse range of locations to film in. There are a lot of attractions and famous locations that are great stand-ins for other cities around the world including France, America, and Italy.
