No matter if you’re an experienced gambler or just a movie buff, one is for sure, movies about gambling are fun and exciting. People looking for new materials to inspire your gambling career, as well as those who want to enjoy some cool gambling and action scenes, will definitely enjoy the following casino and gambling movies.
Let It Ride (1989)
This movie is an interesting comedy with odd characters and twists that follow a forever-loser pathological gambler (portrayed by Richard Dreyfuss). One day, our hero wins every single horse racing bet. This winning streak inspires him to push harder. This premise has the potential to end disastrously, but at its core, this film is just a crazy comedy. Dreyfuss’s mania and some great supporting performances from Jennifer Tilly and David Johansen provide the viewers with great fun. Let It Ride doesn’t have a very healthy message, so it definitely won’t be showing at Gamblers Anonymous meetings.
Molly’s Game (2017)
If you’re a movie fan, you’re probably familiar with Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay-writing skills. However, this title is his directorial debut and is already an Oscar winner. Molly’s Game is a true story based on Molly Bloom’s memoirs. Bloom was a champion skier before a catastrophic accident. This even in her life turned her towards the world of underground gambling, more precisely, poker. As Molly, Jessica Chastain is cold, cocky and bold, and a perfect guide to show us through the world of lucrative yet dangerous illegal poker. This thriller might be guilty of being too proud of its own wit, but thanks to Chastain, Molly’s rush is more than tangible. Plus, you’ll meet some truly tragic characters and hopeless gamblers.
The House (2017)
In many circumstances, gambling is perceived as a serious subject, but not in The House. This is a perfectly hilarious and lighthearted comedy that follows a normal American family but only from the outside. The Johansens (portrayed by comedy legends Will Farrell and Amy Poehler) get into a lot of trouble after losing their daughter’s college scholarship at the last moment. They embark on an extraordinary journey to make things right. If you’ve never gambled before, this movie is a great way to try it, but in the right way. You can check out new casinos online and find ones that offer safe gambling options. Through their reviews, you can find websites with reality check options and financial limits to prevent great losses like the Johansen’s.
Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
This is probably the most famous movie about gambling, both among gamblers and non-gambling movie fans. Ocean’s Eleven follow Danny Ocean and his gang of robbers as they target three Las Vegas casinos. The movie is full of action, but also interesting gambling scenes. The first scene opens with the main characters trying each other at a poker table, and things don’t stop from there. No matter if you’re a gambler or not, this blockbuster will keep you glued to your seat from the beginning to the end. With amazing acting, crazy action scenes and occasional comedy, this is the most famous casino/gambling movie for a reason.
Croupier (1999)
Croupier is the movie that launched Clive Owen into stardom. This is a nail-biting neo-noir title full of internal monologues, just like all those classic detective movies of the period. The movie follows Jack, a croupier whose world quickly gets turned upside down. He suddenly gets entangled in a web of danger, lies and deceit that leads to many questionable deeds like cheating and planning a robbery of the casino where he works as a dealer. Its intriguing story is certainly important, but what keeps the viewers interested are the internal struggles of our anti-hero. If you enjoy a good gambling movie that’s smart and full of dilemmas, thoughts and feelings, Croupier should find itself at the top of your watch list.
If any of these mentioned titles tickle your fancy, you can catch them on streaming platforms. Pop some corn and get ready for an exciting night of action, gambling and flashing lights of the casino.
