New trailer for ‘Blackbird’ with Susan Sarandon, Sam Neill

Kate Winslet and Rainn Wilson are also amongst the cast.

A new trailer for Blackbird, the Roger Michell-directed drama starring Susan Sarandon and Sam Neill has debuted online ahead of a rollout Stateside in December. This one we caught at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and it is well worth seeking out if you can. The film is actually a remake of a 2014 Danish film called Silent Heart and revolves around a family who are brought together after the mother, Lily (Sarandon) decides to end her life after battling ALS. The official synopsis is as follows.

Lily (Susan Sarandon) and Paul (Sam Neill) summon their loved ones to their beach house for one final gathering after Lily decides to end her long lbattle with ALS. The couple is planning a loving weekend complete with holiday traditions, but the mood becomes strained when unresolved issues surface between Lily and her daughters Jennifer (Kate Winslet) and Anna (Mia Wasikowska). Joining the collective farewell are Lily’s son in law (Rainn Wilson), her lifelong friend (Lindsay Duncan), daughter’s partner (Bex Taylor-Klaus) and grandson (Anson Boon). Her story is ultimately one of hope, love and a celebration of life.

Christian Torpe wrote the screenplay for the film. Kate Winslet, Mia Wasikowska, Rainn Wilson, Bex Taylor-Klaus, and Lindsay Duncan round out the impressive cast. The US will get the film in cinemas and on VOD on 18th September while there’s also a release planned for France from 23rd September. More territories are sure to follow.

While there are faults, I was pleased to have been taken on this journey. It is another one of those films where you know how it is all going to play out, but you’re not bothered; it is a story that isn’t about its destination. It is one that will spark debate at the ethics, but of course, that is the point and, while I expected to walk away totally drained, actually the opposite happened – I was uplifted, even if I was in need of a big hug too.
