Christmas is usually a time that families get together and watch films to get into the festive spirit. Whether this be on the run up to Christmas or the big day itself. There has always been a big debate when it comes to the greatest Christmas movies that have ever been made. Bookmakers have commonly offered markets on which film will top the list each year. So here we cover a list of three that simply must be included in most lists as we now draw nearer to the big day.
Elf
Directed by Jon Favreau, this Christmas comedy film has now quickly established itself as one of the greatest of all time since its release back in 2003. It starred Will Ferrell playing the leading role as Buddy, who is a human who was adopted and raised by Santa’s elves. He was praised for this performance as one of his best, with the film grossing $220 million from a budget of just $33 million. The movie also inspired the 2010 Broadway musical of the same name, which gives a further indication of its success.
The Polar Express
Another Christmas classic is 2004’s The Polar Express, which was based on the 1985 book of the same name. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film tells the story of a young boy who travels to the North Pole on a mysterious train to visit Santa Claus who is preparing for Christmas. The film stars Tom Hanks as one of the leads. The Polar Express grossed $311.3 million from a budget of $165 million and was the first all-digital capture film. It is a real feel good Christmas movie and one of the all-time classics.
Home Alone
For many people it is Home Alone that will stand as the number one Christmas movie of all time. This 1990 comedy film was written and produced by John Hughes and stars the likes of Macaulay Culkin and Joe Pesci. The film covers eight year old Kevin McCallister who is left home alone and has to deal with two burglars. It was a huge success and originally became the highest-grossing live action comedy film of all time. It has grossed an incredible $476.7 million to date from a budget of just $18 million. They have also now followed this up with two further movies of the same name.
