The first season will consist of eight episodes and will revolve around the first novel in Pullman’s series of the trilogy of novels, Northern Lights (known as The Golden Compass in some territories). The show has already been picked up for a second season. Here is the sort synopsis from the source material.

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal–including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.

Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want.

But what Lyra doesn’t know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other…

Northern Lights/ The Golden Compass was previously filmed as a feature back in 2007 with Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and Dakota Blue Richards amongst the cast. It made around $372 million around the world from a fairly hefty budget. With only $70 million or so made in he domestic territories, no further adaptations were greenlit. This new series looks superb, though.
