Following its impressive debut at the Sundance Film Festival back in January, and then a European premiere at the Berlinale earlier this month, the first trailer for Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir has been posted online.
The promo is from A24 who will distribute the film later in the year.
Joanna Hogg directs Honor Swinton Byrne, Tom Burke, and Tilda Swinton in the feature, the first of a two part project. The story, a semi autobiographical tale, revolves around Swinton Byrne’s character, a twenty-something film student living in London in the 1980s. The film explores her relationship, both with her peers, her mother (played by Swinton), and her romantic involvement with a complicated and untrustworthy man (played by Burke).
I caught the film in Berlin, and can quite honestly say that it is absolutely one of the best independent films I’ve seen so far this year. All of the cast are excellent and Hogg is on top form. The film has a U.S. release set for May, though a UK street date is still TBC.
Here’s the trailer.
