Looking to step things up in the fashion department? Then, it’s time to pay some serious attention to what you’re sporting around your wrist. A great watch really sets off an outfit and can make quite the statement. To help you choose which exclusive brand works for you, today we’re running through the favourite brands of the rich and famous…
The Royals
The most obvious place to turn to for classic, timeless fashion advice is of course, The Royal Family. Always immaculately turned out, you can rest assured that the items worn by this clan will always be the very best of the best. When it comes to watches, Queen Elizabeth II either accessorises with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 101 she wore to her coronation in 1953, or the more modern version she was gifted by Jaeger-LeCoultre to commemorate 60 years on the throne. For Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, it’s Cartier all the way. Kate wears the Ballon Bleu model, and Meghan the Cartier Tank Francaise.
The Innovators
When it comes to design and innovation, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak are top of the pile. The late Steve Jobs is reported to have worn either a simple Seiko timepiece, or, more often, his Baume et Mercier wristwatch. Fellow Apple co-founder, inventor and electronics engineer, Wozniak opts for a Nixie watch – the technology for which dates back to the Cold War, and has a simple numeric display that works at the flick of the wrist. Perhaps the greatest innovator, especially in terms of time when relative to the speed of light, was Albert Einstein who wore a gold Longines wristwatch dating back to 1929.
The Hollywood Elite
If in doubt, you can always turn to Hollywood for the most up-to-date fashion advice. Matt Damon, Uma Thurman, Chris Hemsworth and Brad Pitt are all fans of Swiss brand, TAG Heuer. Robert Downey Jr has clearly taken a little fashion advice from the British Monarch, given he also sports a Jaeger-LeCoultre, this time an AMVOX5 World Chronograph – a collaboration between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin that Tony Stark would be proud of. Given his passion for flying, it’s no surprise that John Travolta turns to Breitling for his timepieces. And as for leading ladies, all you need to know is that Marilyn Monroe wouldn’t be caught dead without her dainty Blancpain cocktail watch, set with 71 round diamonds and two marquise diamonds.
The Moguls
While Oprah Winfrey probably has hundreds of watches in her collection, her trusty favourite is her Rado True Thinline, which she’s often spotted wearing and has listed repeatedly in her influential gift guides. What watch does Jeff Bezos AKA the richest man on earth spend his money on? The Amazon and Washington Post owner sports an Ulysse Nardin stainless steel timepiece, adorned with sapphire crystals. For Jay Z, it’s luxury Swiss watch brand, Audemar Piguet all the way. In fact, to celebrate his 10th year in music, the rap mogul collaborated with the brand to create a limited-edition Royal Oak Offshore watch with his autograph engraved on the caseback. Anyone who purchased one of only 100 of the limited release also received a limited-edition engraved iPod featuring Jay’s entire discography.
