Following the recent release of The First Purge comes the debut trailer for the spin-off TV series The Purge, which comes to screens later this year. The promo, from the USA Network, was aired at the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend.
The Purge is a 10-episode side-sequel to the popular horror film franchise created by filmmaker James DeMonaco. Like the movies, the series takes place in a dystopian future America where the U.S. government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period during which all crime, including murder, is legal.
The official synopsis reads:
Set in a dystopian America ruled by a totalitarian political party, the series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city. Tying them all together is a mysterious savior who’s impeccably equipped for everything the night throws at them. As the clock winds down with their fates hanging in the balance, each character is forced to reckon with their pasts as they discover how far they will go to survive the night.

Personally, I think that the concept of The Purge is perfectly suited to TV, perhaps more so than film, and I’d be keen to see who it comes together over a longer time frame. Surely they are missing a trick, though. Maybe a real-time 12-episode series may have benefited more?
No news on when or where this might air in the UK, but the USA Network will roll this out in September (the 4th).
Here’s the trailer.
