Shoplifters, the winner of the 2018 Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival, has been picked up for UK release through distributor Thunderbird Releasing. Lily Franky, Ando Sakura, Matsuoka Mayu, Kiki Kilin, Jyo Kairi, and Sasaki Miyu lead the cast of the film, which is directed by Kore-eda Hirokazu.
Here’s the official story synopsis for Shoplifters.
After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them…
Screen says that Thunderbird has also scored the Uk rights for Lee Chang-dong’s Burning, one of the best-reviewed films at this year’s festival.
We’ll bring you news of official UK release dates as we get them.
