Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Non-Stop) will direct Dwayne Johnson in the Disney movie Jungle Cruise. The movie will be based on the Disneyland ride and has been in development at the Mouse House for quite some time. More on the Jungle Cruise director and the upcoming movie below.
Jungle Cruise director found! Jaume Collet-Serra to take on huge Disney project
Collet-Serra’s decision to direct obviously means that he will not be taking on Warner Bros’ Suicide Squad sequel, which we had previously reported that he was being eyed for.
Deadline reports that the Jungle Cruise movie will be an Indiana Jones-like action-adventure, and Collet-Serra was very much interested in getting his hands on a film of its nature, a potential franchise that he will be able to mould around an A-list Hollywood star like Johnson.

The trade blog is reporting that production on the film is likely to start next spring, we’re guessing for a release sometime in 2019. Plot details are being kept under-wraps for now, but the story will revolve around the famous ride at Adventureland at Disneyland, which first opens in 1955. Park guests board replica tramp steamers from a 1930s British explorers’ lodge and are taken on a voyage past many different Audio-Animatronic jungle animals. The tour is led by a live Disney Cast Member delivering a humorous narration. This narration is based on a written and practiced script, but generally is largely delivered ad-lib.
Collet-Serra directed last year’s shark-horror The Shallows, a film that made $119 million worldwide on a $17 million budget. He is also attached to direct a film based on the Waco incident. The 1993 standoff between the FBI and Texas state law enforcement and the David Koresh-led Branch Davidians turned the sleepy town of Elk, just outside of Waco, into a battle zone. There’s no news on when that movie may go into production, but with time-scales involved and the fact that Jungle Cruise is set to go in the early part of 2018, we’re guessing that that movie will go first.
So, what do you think of the new Jungle Cruise director?
