The Wolf Of Wall Street, Focus and Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie is set to play Queen Elizabeth in a new drama from Working Title Films. Robbie will be the former monarch opposite Saiorse Ronan in Mary Queen Of Scots for Working Title and Focus Features with Ronan assuming the role of Mary Stuart.
The film follows Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England, which finds her condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution.
The film has been in development for over a decade with Ronan reportedly attached since 2012. The film has not officially been greenlit as yet, but the star-power of Robbie is sure to help its cause. Phillip Noyce had been attached to direct the film, but now celebrated theatre director Josie Rourke will helm, directing from a rewritten screenplay by House Of Cards’ Beau Willimon, who adapts John Guy’s The True Life Of Mary Stuart.
No word on shooting dates as yet.
Robbie has a few films coming your way soon, including the the upcoming Goodbye Christopher Robin, and also I, Tonya Harding, a biopic based on the disgraced ice skater, which has just finished shooting.
