Legendary actress Carrie Fisher has died at the age of 60. Fisher was best known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars films, a character she played in last year’s The Force Awakens and previously in A New Hope in 1977, and its sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi.
The actress was taken ill on a flight from London to Los Angeles on Friday, where she was said to have suffered a cardiac arrest. A statement released on Tuesday morning local time said that she passed away in hospital.
“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.”
