Nine films have made the Best Foreign Language Oscar short-list. These nine will be whittled down to just five official nominations, which will be announced with the rest of the nominations come January. The films that will compete are:
Australia, “Tanna,” Bentley Dean, Martin Butler, directors
Canada, “It’s Only the End of the World,” Xavier Dolan, director
Denmark, “Land of Mine,” Martin Zandvliet, director
Germany, “Toni Erdmann,” Maren Ade, director
Iran, “The Salesman,” Asghar Farhadi, director
Norway, “The King’s Choice,” Erik Poppe, director
Russia, “Paradise,” Andrei Konchalovsky, director
Sweden, “A Man Called Ove,” Hannes Holm, director
Switzerland, “My Life as a Zucchini,” Claude Barras, director
The big news here is the omission of Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, which was a hot tip for success. Pablo Larrain’s critically acclaimed Neruda, and Babak Anvari’s Under the Shadow, also failed to make the cut.
Nonetheless, these nine will go forward, and then be reviewed by invited committees in New York, Los Angeles and London from Friday January 13th through to Sunday January 15th. Nominations for the 89th Annual Academy Awards will be announced on January 24th, 2017, with the award ceremony set for for February 26th.
