We’ve just woken up from our first sleep since catching the opening episode of the new season of The Walking Dead and can confirm that the nightmares weren’t actually all that bad. The season 7 debut was hugely violent, I think it’s safe to say with the season six cliffhanger put to rest over twenty harrowing minutes in the series’ opening few scenes.
Fans are in slight uproar about the scale of the violence with some even saying that they are not continuing with the show following the horrific, unrelenting violence seen in the first new episode. Well, the show’s executive producer and episode director Greg Nicotero has responded to the airing of the episode to the website Uproxx.
Nicotero says that he has no issue with the episode’s [level of violence] and cites Game Of Thrones as a point of reference.
“I would say that [their threat] means we have done something to affect these people in a way that they don’t necessarily know how to process. Listen… I’ve been shocked at the turns of events on [Game of Thrones]. But you know what? I still love it. And I’m still committed to seeing where that story goes.”
Nicotero added: “So I think it’s a knee-jerk reaction that people have, because they care about these characters. That’s a tribute to every single actor on our show that has perished. It’s unfortunate that people want to take a negative spin on it… [and especially] if that’s really what’s going to happen [and they’ll stop watching], because the show still has a lot to offer!”
Personally, I thought that it was massively intense and perhaps a touch over the top but we need to really hate Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and perhaps we needed to experience his brutality for the character to really work. I thought that it was one of the strongest openers for years and I for sure will be tuning in next week. What are your thoughts?
