Back in August, our own Kat Smith covered some updates regarding the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY sequel and gave her own two cents on the matter, but in a recent interview, the newest round of news regarding Gunn’s Guardians emerged.
When asked whether or not GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 will focus on Star Lord’s father, who fans might of the comics might recall is a man named J’son of Spartax, but that isn’t the direction Gunn will be taking the story. As to who Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) father actually is, we still don’t know, but what we do know that he won’t be the focus of the sequel:
“It’s funny, I don’t want to blackbox it too much,” he said. “You know what I mean? Yeah, it’s like, we’ll find out who is dad is, and it’s going to serve the story. It’s not going to be something like in the Crying Game, though [or The Sixth Sense’s big twist]. I don’t want to do that. It’s not about the revelation of who it is; it’s about what his relationship is to that character.”
We have to wonder though as to why he decided to steer away from the comics. In the interview, Gunn added:
“I just thought there was a more interesting way to go for the cinematic universe that was more believable. There’s things in the comic that on film were a little too Star Wars for me. And I’m not a big fan of the name J’son.”
Logically, I’m siding with Gunn in regards to the believability of the cinematic universe. However, my inner geek is slightly saddened. But perhaps the most interesting aspect of Gunn’s 2017 space-operatic adventure, is his eagerness to explore The Celestials, an ancient race of supreme cosmic beings who have strong ties to Marvel’s cosmic universe:
“Maybe at some point, yeah,” he replied. “I mean, I love that guy (Eson the Searcher) that we see in the Collector’s lab. I love that character. I think he’s really cool. The visual effects artists did a great job with him, and they were given a pretty big task, to create this character in a short amount of time and put him in there. Yeah, I like that stuff, the Celestials. I like the whole idea that the Guardians are a bunch of mortals playing in the field of gods. It’s really about their mortality in the face of all that stuff that makes it both dramatic and fun.”
When asked if the revelation will have an impact on the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn simply had this to say:
“Yeah, I think it’s important.”
Now, perhaps the biggest criticism that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY faced was how the film seemed to be sandwiched nonchalantly between two mentions of Quill’s father. Whilst we’re glad that the sequel won’t center around his father’s revelation, we hope that a similar instance won’t be the case either. Otherwise, keep up the amazing work, Gunn. Keep it up.
