TV is currently packed to the rafters with sagas of men fighting for dominance. But the latest potential offering from Amazon Studios could be more intriguing than most, with the online streamer in the frame to take on an adaptation of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s The Last Tycoon. The famously unfinished tome saw young and brilliant Hollywood studio exec Monroe Stahr pitted against his powerful boss Pat Brady against the backdrop of moviemaking in the 1930s. The two protagonists were based on Irving Thalberg and Louis B. Mayer respectively. A film version was released in 1976, directed by Elia Kazan and starring no less than Robert De Niro.
CAPTAIN PHILLIPS writer Billy Ray is reportedly converting the text into an ongoing drama, with talk of a pilot order. Sony Pictures Television are looking to partner up alongside Amazon following a failed deal at HBO. Chris Keyser has been earmarked as showrunner.
