You’ll know Joe Swanberg’s work more recently for the excellent DRINKING BUDDIES (our review), but also he’s now famous for being top of the mumblecore movement, which basically means he makes a lot of tiny budget indie movies with a lot of improv that likes to mix non-professional actors with a few of those other types.
The majority of the time he comes up with interesting, real-life style stories that try to find that connection into your own existence and you know what, I think he and this genre usually manage that quite well. Today we’ve got the first trailer for HAPPY CHRISTMAS that stars Swanberg alongside Anna Kendrick, Mark Webber, Melanie Lynskey, and Lena Dunham.
This time around Anna Kendrick’s character Jenny, a seemingly ‘lost in the world’ 20-something who decides she wants to move in with her brother Jeff (Swanberg) in Chicago. Obviously though, Jeff already has his own life with his wife Kelly (Lynskey) and young child so the arrival of Jenny who’s basically invited herself throws everything up in the air. Jenny also makes a friend in the shape of Carson (Dunham), and they start to help Kelly get some form of career back on track.
There’s obviously even more going on but check out the trailer below for this naturalistic film:
HAPPY CHRISTMAS opens, ironically, at the end of June in the States on a limited release and in cinemas. We’ll keep you posted about all UK dates once they release them!
