US TV network Fox, in partnership with Landscape Entertainment, is developing a new event series based on the early years of Jesus’ life. Nazareth will follow the Messiah’s so-called lost years, starting with a family pilgrimage to Jerusalem at the age of 13 and ending up with his baptism aged 30, which marked the beginning of his public ministry.
So what might be in store for viewers in this coming of age story? Jesus trying out new hair styles? Learning important life lessons? I suspect we probably won’t see him falling in with a bad crowd and experimenting with sex, drugs and rock n’ roll (but you never know – remember Scorsese’s THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST anyone?).
Nazareth will be written by David Franzoni (GLADIATOR), who will also produce the series along with Bob Cooper of Landscape Entertainment. If all goes ahead I imagine the series it’ll be popular. Jesus of Nazareth (1977), THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (2012) and mini-series The Bible (2013 – pictured above) all proved popular with audiences. However, whenever the Bible’s turned into cinema or TV, controversy often follows so we’ll have to see if Nazareth makes waves or just slips under the radar.
