AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is nearing its start date for filming on the highly anticipated Marvel studios sequel. With 2012’s incredible AVENGERS grossing 1.5 Billion worldwide and becoming the third most lucrative film of all time, the upcoming sequel could not have a more difficult task on its hands.
AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON will have a tough job out-doing its predecessor both in terms of story and financial success, but no doubt Joss Whedon (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, SERENITY) is up to the challenge after giving us the phenomenal first installment. Now it’s been revealed that Thomas Kretschmann has been cast as a secondary villain to James Spader’s title character of Ultron. Kretschmann will be playing classic Captain America villain Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker who is described as ‘a Nazi officer working for terrorist organization HYDRA who runs up against both Captain America (Chris Evans) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)’.
Despite the fact that Kretschmann is hardly a household name, he has featured in some of the most popular action films of the past ten years including RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE, KING KONG and WANTED. The German actor has also most recently starred in NBC’s successful DRACULA television series as Abraham Van Helsing. If you have yet to see Kretschmann’s handsome mug in any of these great productions, you will definitely get the chance soon as the actor has reportedly signed a multi-picture contract as per usual for Marvel.
Kretschmann joins fellow newcomers James Spader as Ultron, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch. The film will also see the return of Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders.
