THN were highly impressed with the first footage of Sony’s reboot of the sci-fi/action classic ROBOCOP, when it was shown over in San Diego Comic Con. New director Jose Padilha has crafted a wholly unique vision of “the future of law enforcement” and he deserves some praise for giving a different, and frankly fresh interpretation of the events of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 ultraviolet masterpiece. The Killing‘s rising actor Joel Kinnaman takes the title role as the surviving cop-turned-machine, delivering justice on the streets of Detroit on behalf of OmniCorp. That is until he begins thinking for himself.
In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.
ROBOCOP is slated for cinemas from the 7th February 2014. It co-stars Abbie Cornish, Samuel. L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Jay Baruchel, Jackie Earl Haley, Jennifer Ehle, Michael Kenneth Williams and Gary Oldman. Follow the film via its official Twitter and Facebook pages.
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
