Although some may argue that The Simpsons has continued for far too long (25 Seasons and counting) it seems this season may well be the best the show has produced in years with a Futurama crossover planned, guest appearance’s from Stan Lee, Daniel Radcliffe and Judd Apatow and finally Guillermo Del Toro’s Halloween special TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XXIV.
Guillermo Del Toro has directed the latest in the annual ‘Treehouse of Horror’ special episodes for The Simpsons. The opening sequence has been released online for his episode of the long running television series and it’s certainly worth a watch for any horror fan. This gorgeously constructed opening sequence is a treasure trove of references to some of the most famous horror films of all time such as THE BIRDS and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. There’s even some references to some of Del Toro’s own films thrown into the mix with nods to BLADE, PANS LABYRINTH and PACIFIC RIM that can be seen throughout the sequence.
Check out a snippet of an interview with the iconic film director:
‘The Simpsons titles are so iconic and yet they’ve never been riffed in this vein, I really wanted to land the connections between the [show’s] set pieces and the titles and some of the most iconic horror movies, and intersperse them with some of my stuff in there for pure joy’.
‘For example the idea that Ms. Krabappel could be outside the school with Alfred Hitchcock which is a reference to the sequence in The Birds that happens outside of the school in Bodega Bay. To use Chief Wiggum as the Cyclops from Harryhausen, dipping the [Lard Lad] donut in a water tank, to have the nuclear spill from Mr. Burns’ plant create zombies — all of this stuff seems to make sense to interconnect’.

THE SIMPSONS TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XXIV will air in the US this Sunday on 6th October with no word yet on a UK air date but don’t expect to wait too long for this gem. The Hollywood News will update you on anything SIMPSONS related as we get it.
