FILTH has had a week early release in Scotland and has quite rightly broken all previous records for a Box Office opening-weekend. It currently sits on top position taking just shy of £250,000. These figures triumphed past James McAvoy’s previous Scottish openings for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and WANTED, plus it’s surpassed TRAINSPOTTING which took £94,460 when released in 1996. The latter, in fairness, didn’t have quite the marketing campaign as this back then.
However, these figures indicate one of the largest openings of all time for a British film after it was released in Scotland, last Friday, 27th September, a week ahead of the rest of the UK & Ireland.
FILM is the film adaptation of the novel by Irvine Welsh of the same name, with a screenplay by Jon S. Baird who also directs one of the unforgettable films of the year, you can read my very positive review by clicking here.
The film follows scheming Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox (Jamie Bell), Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of unwitting Chief Inspector Toal. As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control.
James McAvoy gives the performance of his career and is joined by a fantastic cast including Jamie Bell, Imogen Poots, Jim Broadbent, Joanne Froggatt, Shirley Henderson, Eddie Marsan, Emun Elliott, Martin Compston, Shauna Macdonald and Gary Lewis.
Written by Jon S. Baird who also directs and produced with Ken Marshall. FILTH is out on Friday 4th October in the rest of the UK.
