We’ve another look at two upcoming, albeit very different, cinematic offerings due in the coming weeks.
First is the latest television spot for Robert Rodriguez’s crazy action sequel MACHETE KILLS. Crater-faced former criminal Danny Trejo reprises his role of the Mexican mercenary this time brought in by US President Charlie Sheen to foil the plans of Mel Gibson’s madman. Just a heads up. Mel is not playing himself!
Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent MACHETE, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.
MACHETE KILLS co-stars Sofia Vergara, Alexa Vega, Elle LaMont, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Zoe Saldana, Edward James Olmos, Elise Avellan, Electra Avellan, William Sadler, Lady Gaga, Vanessa Hudgens, Antonio Banderas and Marko Zaror. It’s released in cinemas from the 11th October.
Next we have another look at the acclaimed visionary filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D-shot sci-fi thriller GRAVITY. The film has been dropping-jaws at a number of festival screenings, not only for the stunning visuals but also high praise for the film’s only two leads – Oscar-winners George Clooney and specifically Sandra Bullock.
Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
GRAVITY hits cinemas from 4th October 2013 in the US and 8th November in the UK.
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
