Joss Whedon Discusses James Spader As Ultron

It came as a huge surprise when Ultron was named as the main antagonist for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (Bear in mind the title hadn’t received its subheading at that point). Mainly because THE AVENGERS had teased Thanos during the end credits. Well, Thanos will have to wait because we’re all about the robot that wants to destroy Earth’s mightiest heroes. James Spader was cast as the voice of Ultron and Joss Whedon has explained exactly why.

Talking to Marvel’s very own The Watcher, Whedon had this to say:

Spader was my first and only choice. He’s got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling, but he’s also very human and humorous. Ultron is not Hal (from 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY). Spader can play all of the levels. He’s the guy to break The Avengers into pieces.

I’d have to agree with the man (great minds). As a huge fan of STARGATE I’ve always enjoyed Spader’s work. For how menacing he really is you just need to watch WOLF. I can just imagine that voice coming from that metallic body with the right amounts of manipulation, power, and aggression.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is released 1st May 2015. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie and James Spader.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.

I would have liked Ultron’s voice to come from a vocal processor, not from a real person.
