Hoffman & Dench Set For BBC’s Adaptation Of Roald Dahl’s ‘Esio Trot’

Dustin Hoffman Judi Dench

Easily my favourite author as child, Roald Dahl’s stories such as ‘Charlie & The Chocolate Factory‘, ‘The Twits‘ and ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine‘, kept me captivated for years. While we’ve had film adaptions of a number his wondrous tales, one such book is about to make it to the screen for the first time, albeit the small screen.

The BBC have confirmed they’re bringing us Dahl’s magical ESIO TROT featuring a superb cast. Academy Award-winner Dustin Hoffman will play Mr Hoppy, the retired bachelor with a secret passion for his apartment neighbour, Mrs Silver. Fellow Oscar-winner Judi Dench will take on the role of the unknowing neighbour, who lavishes all of her affection on Alfie, her pet tortoise.

The 90-minute feature, to be shot in London in the Spring, will be directed by LITTLE DORRIT’s Dearbhla Walsh and produced by Hilary Bevan Jones’ Endor Productions and screened on BBC One next year. It will be written by THE VICOR OF DIBLEY duo Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
