The final quarter of each calendar year tend to bring the heavyweight films that usually end up doing quite well at the awards season. In case of awards, absence doesn’t seem to make the heart grow fonder and therefore it is rare to see the Best Picture nominees to be films released early in the year. This year will probably be no exception and one of the films that is mooted as a big contender for a ton of awards is Steve McQueen’s TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE which follows a true story about a free black man from New York, Solomon Northup (the underrated Chiwetel Ejiofor) who gets abducted and sold into slavery in the south.
A great cast consisting of people like Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Paulson, and Quvenzhané Wallis, makes this likely to be featured heavily at the Academy Awards next year. Fox Searchlight definitely seems to think so as they have scheduled it to be released on 27th December 2013 which is a prime spot for an Oscar candidate. Only time will tell if it pans out that way.
TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE is directed by Steve McQueen. It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Paulson, and Quvenzhané Wallis. It is set for a limited release on 27th December 2013 in the US.
