As a tattoo owner/wearer and fan, nothing is more welcome than a documentary revealing that there’s nothing wrong with a good piece of body art. TATTOO NATION, directed by Eric Schwartz, aims to do exactly that – by setting in film the back story of how this very specific and permanent type of body modification became so popular in such a short space of time.
Featuring interviews from the likes of Danny Trejo, Don ‘Ed’ Hardy, Freddy Negrete and Charlie Cartwright (amongst many others), the documentary tells the story of how an art form particularly popular with sailors and prisoners has become a status symbol among the average Joe Schmoe.
I’m a firm believer that if done well, tattoos can be empowering. This film looks as if that’s exactly what it wants to do – empower fans and squash any illusions that if you have one, you must have been arrested at some point!
TATTOO NATION will hit US cinemas from 15th March 2013, with the UK following shortly after on 30th April.
