Jeremy Renner has spoken out about his displeasure at how Hawkeye was treated in THE AVENGERS. Hawkeye a.k.a assassin Clint Barton, first appeared with a brief cameo role in THOR. He didn’t do much in that film, but his character was captured in just a few lines as he begun to admire Thor as he beat Barton’s colleagues. Hawkeye was a go for THE AVENGERS but when Joss Whedon came aboard he reportedly rewrite a lot of the script penned by Zak Penn. This left Hawkeye becoming one of Loki’s mindless brainwashed minions for the first half of the film.
For 90% of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play. It’s kind of avacancy. [He’s] not even a bad guy, because there’s not really a consciousness to him. To take away who that character is and just have him be this robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses… I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. Fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No. Is [Hawkeye] working for SHIELD or not? There’s a lot of unanswered questions, even for me.
I can understand Renner’s frustration if he was truly expecting something else before filming began. I must admit, even I was confused when Hawkeye was bewitched so early on as that character had been given no formal introduction. Once he eventually returns to his senses there was a lot of interesting back story hinted at between him and Black Widow but it was never fully explored.
I hope we see Hawkeye and the rest of SHIELD again before THE AVENGERS 2, but with Marvel focusing the story on an intergalactic level now they are introducing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and Thanos, will there be any room left? Even if it doesn’t work out with SHIELD at least Renner has two more secret organisation franchises to work for in both MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL and THE BOURNE LEGACY.
