I recently saw the Lorene Scafaria-directed SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD, starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. Although I’d seen several previous films starring Knightley, I never thought much of her. However, the film changed my mind and I started to warm to her – and this change in opinion looks set to continue. Here we have a brand new six minute clip taken from Keira’s latest project ANNA KARENINA, directed by long-time collaborator Joe Wright (PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, ATONEMENT).
Miss Knightley stars as our title character, a lady who marries into wealth (but strict religion) via new husband Alexei Karenin (Jude Law). However, as Anna realises what she’s signed herself up for, her feelings start to fray and she becomes distracted by new love interest Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson). Focusing on the universal theme of love, Wright delves into the world of adultery, familial relationships and friendship, everything Anna wants but seems to run away from.
Adapted by Tom Stoppard (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE) from the novel written by 19th century author Leo Tolstoy, this is Wright’s third foray into period romance. The clip informs us that the film was mainly created in a dilapidated theatre, which enabled the crew to smoothly switch from one ‘location’ to another. Very clever!
ANNA KARENINA co-stars Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Alicia Vikander, Olivia Williams, Domhnall Gleeson, Michelle Dockery, Ruth Wilson and Tannishtha Chatterjee. It’ll be released in cinemas from 7th September.
Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging.
Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
