Raimi Reflects On His ‘Mistakes’

Being the director behind fan favourites THE SPIDER-MAN TRILOGY, DRAG ME TO HELL and the EVIL DEAD films, you’d think that Sam Raimi is in a pretty comfortable position. Especially because, at the moment, he’s promoting his upcoming project OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, which is sure to be a huge financial and audience rating success (you can watch the beautiful trailer for it here). In the meantime, Raimi has been talking at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con, where he divulged some tit-bits about his past, present and future film making:

‘From every movie I make, I learn what not to do. I make a thousand mistakes and I’m painfully aware of them — it’s not like you have to recognize, oh, what was my mistake here? I’m always aware of where I make wrong moves. So it’s helped me move forward, and I’ve learned a lot of lessons.’

Who would like to guess what Raimi is talking about? Who knows! Could it possibly be a reference to his last film, DRAG ME TO HELL, the horror flick that opened at Cannes to critical positivity, but elsewhere wasn’t so great? When asked what kinds of lessons he learned from making the film, Raimi said that he took many from it but can’t think of any specifically. So how does DRAG ME TO HELL differ from OZ? Well, apart from a psychopathic gypsy woman (lets hope!) many things – comedy included:

‘…[On DMTH] the type of comedy that film has, that dark comedy, is just a completely different thing than this film. [On OZ] This is a very straightforward family picture — I would say it’s a classically Disney type of movie. It’s about finally recognizing that the things you do in this world have consequences and how to be the best person you can be. It’s about recognizing those mistakes we’ve made and moving past them and growing into something better than you were when you started out.’

Raimi also mentions that one of his trademarks – kinetic movement of the camera – will be used more to portray Oz’s landscapes than for comedy. Where we might have seen some funny web-slinging action in SPIDERMAN, Raimi is said to be using a fast-moving camera to sweep over his superbly designed landscapes and we got a taster with the trailer and poster. Although I’m not a fan of his previous works, he might just change my mind from the looks of the promotional material already released (especially since it stars the brilliantly talented Michelle Williams, who I am in awe of).

OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL stars James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams. It is due for release from 8th March 2013.

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
