Celebrity gossip site TMZ have accidentally captured images of legendary director Terence Malick. I often wonder how cryptozoologists feel when they receive pictures of a yeti or the Loch Ness Monster and now I know. Malick is a notoriously shy man, refusing to do interviews or any press for his own films.
The video takes place outside a restaurant where it appears Malick and actor Benicio Del Toro had been dining. A reporter then asks Del Toro about countries that should be inducted as states into the union. Little did the politically motivated reporter realise that he was capturing some incredibly rare images. If you think I’m exaggerating, simply do a Google image search for Terence Malick. The most recent picture I was able to find is from 1999, and that’s the one I’ve used for this article.
It’s easy to see how uncomfortable Malick is in the video. He immediately turns away and starts to look through his wallet, which really amuses Del Toro. I’ve always admired Malick’s ability to let his films speak for themselves. It leaves them completely open to interpretation. I would like to take this opportunity to offer Malick a celebrity hide-and-seek award because in this age of the Internet and social media, I can’t believe he’s remained so discrete.
Malick’s next film TO THE WONDER is scheduled for release this year. It will focus on a man reconnecting with a love from his past. He’s lined up an exceptional cast featuring the likes of Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Rachel Weisz and Javier Bardem. Malick also has a documentary concerning the birth of the universe entitled VOYAGE OF TIME in post-production AND he is already filming another film called KNIGHTS OF CUPS, which will reunite him with Christian Bale. For a man who once left 20 years between projects, it seems as though Malick is now a workaholic.
Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
