Hollywood megastar and civil rights campaigner George Clooney has been arrested during a protest outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington DC. He was taken into custody along with fellow demonstrators Martin Luther King III, Virginia Democratic Congressman Jim Moran, Massachusetts Democratic Congressman Jim McGovern, Ben Jealous, the president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and his own father, Nick Clooney.
They were raising awareness of the human rights atrocities on the border between Sudan and South Sudan. The activists were taken into custody when they reportedly crossed the police line and refused to leave.
Clooney is a keen liberal activist and has frequently spoken out against the humanitarian crisis in Sudan as well as many equal rights issues both in America and abroad. Recently he starred with Jane Lynch and Brad Pitt in a one off play about Proposition 8 in California.
