CLUE opened the floodgates, BATTLESHIPS is soon to follow and Ridley Scott keeps threatening an adaptation of Monopoly. The bizarre non-video game adaptation is picking up steam, and generating the easiest content to parody on comedy sites since SNAKES ON A PLANE. Joining the ranks now is WHERE’S WALDO (or Wally as the UK knows him), favourite of finding things enthusiasts. MGM’s adaptation will be a ‘live-action family adventure’, presumably detailing the search for the titular character, perhaps like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.
Some may call this another example of Hollywood laziness, perhaps cradling their head in their hands as they do so, but Eric Ellenbogen, co-CEO of Waldo owners Classic Media, has faith in the project.
‘Waldo is the most searched-for character in the world’, he says, and perhaps this is true, especially following some of this year’s events. It is undeniable that the Waldo franchise is enormous, having shifted over 55 million books worldwide, and remaining a perennial low effort fancy dress option.
‘With thanks to MGM, fans everywhere will find Waldo in movie theaters with his motion picture debut’ Ellenbogen continues. There is no sign as of yet what form the film will take; will it literally be an hour and a half of searching for Waldo, or will the stripey clothed introvert be allowed the spotlight? It’ll be a while before we can find out, but Waldo probably has enough of a fanbase to ensure at least a moderate hit.
