Andy Serkis left in pain shooting new Ian Dury film

Andy Serkis got so immersed in a film role it left him permanently in pain.

The actor – who stars in the new musical biopic ‘Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll’ where he plays polio-stricken rocker Ian Dury –spent six months in the gym working out only one side of his body in order to leave the other weak, to properly mimic the musician’s movements.

He said: “I’ve got a dodgy back at the best of times but the weight of that calliper, throwing it about everyday; it shoves your body off-centre.

“And it makes this massive weird muscle develop in my groin. I’m still recovering from it all.”

The 45-year-old star also revealed that he’d spent three years slowly becoming his character who was the so-called ‘pop laureate’ of the late 1970s London music scene.

He said: “I think that a lot of things have come together with this role. There’s a lot that floats my boat in terms of Ian’s style, Ian’s persona and Ian’s artistic demeanour.”

Andy has several other projects in the pipeline next year; he will also reprise his ‘Lord of the Rings’ role of Gollum in ‘The Hobbit’ and has been cast as Captain Haddock in ‘TinTin’.
