paranormal-activity.jpgIt was horror all of the way at the weekend box-office with two flicks making up the top two. For the first time Saw was beaten to the top spot by another supernatural hit, Paranormal Activity which bagged $22 million worth of tickets in the U.S. and Canada. That beat Saw VI, which could only muster $14.8 million. The first film in the series opened to $18.3 million, the next four sequels all kicked off their opening weekends with more than $30 million. So it wasn't good news for the golden franchise.

Click on through for the rest of the numbers.
couples_retreat.jpgIt's that time of the week when we report the weekend box-office in the good old U, S and A, and we're reporting this week that a Vince Vaughn comedy has taken the top spot from the mighty ZOMBIELAND which did so weel in getting to number one last weekend. COUPLE'S RETREAT managed to bag an impressive $35.3 million in its first three days. That's a ton more than studio expectations. ZOMBIELAND didn't do that bad though, retaining the number two spot and adding another $15 million to its haul. C'mon Sony, time to greenlight that sequel. CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS continues its success also, staying at three with $12 million in the bank.

The big success story of the weekend though is PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, which is getting some amazing Internet buzz, made the number five spot with a shade over $7 million taken. That amount of cash was taken in- wait for it - less than 200 theaters!!!!

Top ten after the jump.
zombieland.jpgDespite The Hollywood News' recent morphing into the showbiz bohemoth that it has become, we still sometimes like to report movie news... No really. So here's Sunday's big news. The film that literally everyone is talking about everywhere that you go at the moment is ZOMBIELAND, a zom-com road trip flick that stars Woody Harrelson. The film has managed to top the box-office in North America, netting more than it's actual budget in just three days. $25 million. That's domestically folks, and that does not even include any international wedge. It did noticeably better that the really poorly reviewed Ricky Gervais movie THE INVENTION OF LYING, which landed at the number four spot with just $7.3 in big green. Nice to see TOY STORY and its sequel back. The double-header 3D flick(s) managed a number three ith $12.5, just behind that other animated movie CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS, which continues to do well.

Here's the full line up...

1. 'Zombieland' - $25,000,000

2. 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' -  $16,700,000

3. 'Toy Story' 3-D double feature - $12,500,000

4. 'The Invention of Lying' -    $7,350,000

5. 'Surrogates' - $7,344,000

6. 'Capitalism: A Love Story' -    $4,850,000

6 (Tie). 'Whip It' - $4,850,000

7. 'Fame' - $4,754,000

8. 'The Informant' - $3,800,000

9. 'Love Happens' - $2,777,000

10. 'Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself' - $2,670,000
The weekend box-office figures are in and Sony's new animated film CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS entered the chart at the top spot. The film pulled in a huge $30.1 million, but the haul isn't as much as the studio wanted. The flick, according to the Los Angeles Times, is the studio's third animated outing, and its take was essentially on par with its first release, 2006's OPEN SEASON . The paper noted that given three years of ticket price inflation and the fact that the majority of "Cloudy's" theaters played the movie in digital 3-D, which brings a ticket-price surcharge. OPEN SEASON opened with $23.6 million.

cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs.jpgAnother disappointment was the Megan Fox starrer JENNIFER'S BODY, which only managed a number five position with $6.8 million in takings. That was beaten by this week's other new release LOVE HAPPENS, the Jennifer Aniston starrer, which bagged position four with $8.4m in green.

We have the chart in full below...

1. 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' - $30,100,000

i-can-do-bad-all-by-myself.jpgI cannot say that I am the biggest Tyler Perry fan, but you have to hand it to the dude, as he has another massive hit, and US number one movie on his hands. His flick I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF made $24 million over the weekend, easily securing the top spot ahead of the animated fare 9, which scored a rather disappointing $10.8 million. Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS held on to the number three position this week, adding another $6,5 to its total. The film is easily over the $100 million mark in total now.

The other two big new releases disappointed further, with SORORITY ROW and WHITEOUT making just over $5 million each. The top ten is printed in full below...

FD4-teaser-poster.jpgIt was the battle of the horror flicks this past weekend in the US with Warner Brothers' THE FINAL DESTINATION going up against The Weinstein Company's HALLOWEEN II. The clear winner over the three days was the former movie, which made $28.3 million since midnight screenings on Friday. Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS had a pretty strong second week out there, scoring anothe $20 million + in green, edging out Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN sequel. That film made about $17.4 over the three days to Sunday. DISTRICT 9 still makes the top five at four with another $10.9 million in the bank, and GI JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA continues its stay with $8 million dead in ticket sales.

It is QT's biggest opening day ever, and yes that includes PULP FICTION! Neill Blomkamp's DISTRICT 9 also held firm, raking in another $18.9 million to secure the second spot on the list. GI JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA made up the top three with another $12.5 estimated haul.

district-9-number1.jpgThe Neill Blomkamp sci-fi-er DISTRICT 9 has taken a whopping $37 million at the US box-office in its first three days. The low budget film, produced by Peter Jackson, made the huge sum, easily fending off GI JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA, which made the number two position, making a little over $22 million. This week;s other new entry, THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, adapted from the book of the same name, entered the chart at number three with $19.2 million in takings.

See how the rest fared after the jump.
gi-joe-movie-number-one.jpgThe weekend box-office numbers are in and, as expected, GI JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA hit the number spot giving Paramount Pictures their third hit of the summer. The flick, which stars Channing Tatum and Sienna Miller, grossed $56.2 million over the three days, over double the amount in green of the number two movie at the US this weekend, the fellow debuter JULIE AND JULIA., which bagged $20.1 million, a superb start for the Nora Ephron directed movie.

GI JOE does have a way to go to recoup its $175 million budget, and is getting 'okay' reviews, so we'll see how it builds and does overseas.

G-FORCE made up the top three adding another $9.8 million to its haul, while HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE made anothe $8.8 mil. Last week's numero uno FUNNY PEOPLE dropped all of the way to number five this week, with $7.8 million in the bank. Again, very disappointing for the new Judd Apatow movie.

The top ten is listed in full after the jump.
The Judd Apatow/ Adam Sandler comedy FUNNY PEOPLE has topped the US box-office, but only with a modest take of around $23 million from just over 3000 screens across the country. HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE clung on to its number two position with another $17.7 million in the bank though G-FORCE slipped from number one to number three.

funny-people.jpgThe other big opening this week was ALIENS IN THE ATTIC, which only managed to open at number five with just $7.8 million in green.

Here's the top ten in full.

1. Funny People          $ 23.4 Million
2. Harry Potter 6          $ 17.7 Million
