The
Farrelly Brothers are back with another raunchy opus. They're the jokesters who
brought Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin to the screen. With the wildly funny There's
Something about Mary, they've reached new heights in offensiveness.
Ben
Stiller plays a lonely guy who becomes obsessed with finding an old high school
crush, played by an extremely likable Cameron Diaz. Enough with the plot, it's
just an excuse for the Farrelly Brothers to unleash as many obscene jokes as they
possibly can, and that they do. In fact, There's Something about Mary offers a
scene so audacious, so foul, so completely unbelievable, I couldn't believe they
got away with it. It is one of the most memorable comic moments I've seen in recent
years. If you think I'm building it up too much, you have nothing to worry about.
One way or the other, I'm sure this scene will get some kind of reaction out of
you. Which is what makes the Farrelly Brothers so damned funny. They're willing
to throw anything in for a laugh, much the same way the Zucker Brothers do.
At
the core of this outrageous comedy, are two very likable performances by Stiller
and Diaz. They play off each other wonderfully. There's Something about Mary does
have moments that aren't funny; but that's the chance you take when your making
a laugh-a-second comedy. For the most part, There's Something about Mary offers
some of the funniest stuff I've seen in a long time. It's raunchy but it's a winner!
