British
great Ian McKellen plays James Whale, the suave and sophisticated filmmaker that
was responsible for Frankenstein and The Bride of Frankenstein in the 30s. Director
Bill Condon has made a brilliant film about Mr. Whale in his later years.
The
story focuses on Whale and a bond he develops with his gardener, beautifully played
by Brendan Fraser. Things become complicated due to Whale's illness and homosexual
lifestyle, which the Fraser character wants no part of. Gods And Monsters is an
interesting take on the life of a filmmaker that brought to mind Tim Burton's
Ed Wood. However, this film takes a more serious approach.
Last
but not least is the technical specifics about the film. Not only is it expertly
acted, written and directed, but the cinematography and art direction are brilliant
as well. Particularly in the flashback sequences which re-create the making of
the Frankenstein pictures. Rounding out the stellar cast is Lynn Redgrave as Whale's
longtime maid and protector.
This
is a wonderful film that made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival last year
and it deserves every award it wins.
