Last
issue, it was the ludicrous Inspector Gadget and this time it's Dudley Do-Right
who finds himself transported from cartoon to real life--in this ridiculously
dull telling of the beloved Jay Ward Canadian Mountie.
Brendan
Fraser (who also played George Of The Jungle, another Jay Ward classic) is the
goofy do-gooder who tries to foil the evil Snidely Whiplash (Alfred Molina of
Boogie Nights fame) from taking over a Canadian Rockies community.
First
and foremost, this new film from Hugh Wilson doesn't capture the spirit of Ward's
cartoon. It also doesn't help that Wilson and his writers have tried to update
the material. It just doesn't work. None of the performances are memorable, except
for the scene-stealing Eric Idle (from the Monty Python troupe) as Dudley's eccentric
mentor.
The only
reason I would recommend this unfunny borefest is for Ward's all new Fractured
Fairy Tale' short (entitled The Phox, The Box, and The Lox) that precedes the
film. And surprisingly, it captures the spirit of the Tales that appeared on The
Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Pay your admission to watch the short, then leave!
