MEN IN BLACK 3 is released in theatres 25th May with stars Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin.

Millar considered the first KICK-ASS – directed by Matthew Vaughn –to be ‘the greatest superhero movie ever made’ (THN can hear Joss Whedon laughing from here), and said the sequel is set to outdo the original in every way possible.

For those that don’t know, Millar’s ‘Kick-Ass 2′ has been on the shelves for a while, so it will be interesting to see what becomes of the second film. Jane Goldman’s script for the first movie made some significant changes from the comic’s plotting – can we expect the same from the sequel? Here’s what Wadlow had to say:

‘Mark did the sequel to the comic book. So I had sort of this movie and the comic book and I had to find the intersection. An adaptation was quite a challenge, but one that I really enjoyed and loved. I think the most important thing that’s gonna change from the Kick-Ass 2 comic to Kick-Ass 2 the movie was just really finding an emotional story to tell. Because what I certainly loved about the first film, and what I think elevated it above most comic book adaptations, is the heart and the emotion in the film. It was sort of my challenge as the film maker and storyteller to find something as emotional in the second film and I think we have some stuff that people are gonna really respond to.’

Fans will be pleased to know that original director Vaughn will remain on board as a producer, so the sequel should maintain a similar tone and keep in the spirit of the original. And from what Wadlow says, the film is happening soon:

‘I’m here in London because we’re making the movie. They brought me over about a week ago and I’m going to be here for about a year. It’s happening. Our first day of photography is in September. It’s all moving forward. I wrote the script over the holidays. I’m just very happy to be here and I’m very lucky to be working with Matthew Vaughn, whose just an incredible producer. Obviously he’s a fantastic writer and director, but he’s produced even more movies than he’s directed and he’s having a tremendous experience so far. It’s moving forward and it’s happening.’

The big question, of course, is whether original stars Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz will return as Kick-Ass and Hit Girl respectively.

‘Nothing is official yet. But I had breakfast with Chloe two weeks ago and she’s read the script and she’s very excited about what we’re doing with Hit-Girl. If you’ve read the comic, you know, she gives up being Hit-Girl, which was a brilliant idea I thought on Mark’s part. It’s something I explore something quiet deeply in the movie because what happens in the comic is she sort of steps away from the story in many ways and she’s sort of sidelined while Dave is working with Justice Forever and Chris is becoming the Mother[frick]er. But I was quite interested in what happens to her when she’s not being Hit-Girl. Her story is a major, major part of the film and she’s excited about the ideas and we’re in talks.’

Either way, exciting time for KICK-ASS fans…

Synopsis: A crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.

Behind RED TAILS is the important and influential real-life historical tale following the lives of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program during World War II. The film follows their fight (and flight) against being kept away from the front line and the war effort.  They’re separated and left behind to do those jobs that no-one else wants to. In RED TAILS, the true story is brought to the big screen by screenwriter John Ridley (THREE KINGS), directed by Anthony Hemingway (TREME, THE WIRE) and produced by George Lucas, yes, that one.

Although RED TAILS does focus on a number of characters, only a couple really stand out. David Olelowo as Joe ‘Lightning’ Little is impressive as the daredevil pilot of the crew who has to learn to fly with the team, if they’re all to become part of the bigger picture. Another strong performance is Terrence Howard, as Colonel A.J. Bullard. His fight is against the top brass of the military, as he tries to not only keep his squadron in the air but also make sure their talents are noticed enough to help with the war effort.

Cuba Gooding Jr co-stars as a commanding officer who, with all the best intentions, encourages them to do the best with what they’ve got, but his performance is underwhelming and his reliance on a pipe to enhance his authority looks like a last-minute idea and becomes inadvertently comedic.

It feels like Hollywood could have taken a courageous nosedive into this true-story and truly get into the gravity of what happened but… it doesn’t quite pull up. It undoubtedly takes note of the idea behind-the-reality and when we’re in the air, the fight scenes are vivid, brave and impressive but this doesn’t take away from the lack of depth once we’re back on land. There, the story is thin, the script painfully clichéd in places and it dishearteningly disappoints.

I was hoping for a strong, military historic story of bravery, fighting-against-the-odds in changing times, when these pilots were perfectly equal and utterly mistreated and then onto their eventual success. We do see this, we are shown it but we don’t really feel it and, strangely, the great air battles and their CGI maybe take away from this a little. Sure, there are unexpected deaths, great flight sequences but it’s all a bit too shiny and, somehow, dated but not in the way intended.

To summarise, David Olelowo and Terrence Howard give strong, driven performances with heart, honour and honesty. On one hand, this is a great way for the real story to get noticed and maybe it’ll be picked up again in the future and we’ll get something grittier. I just felt that the studio had a chance to explore deeper into the truth and temperament of the times but, unfortunately, RED TAILS is great opportunity not fully realised and therefore, ironically, never quite takes off.

I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week. We have a very good take on it. And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist.

Fans can rest easy that the characters from the beloved original will not be tampered with or resurrected in a INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF BEING TOO OLD FOR THIS SHIT-style.

We can also take solace in that – assuming the film lives up to expectations – Scott’s return to another of his past glories, ALIEN, has proven to be one of the most exciting film events of the year.

PROMETHEUS arrives in UK cinemas 1st June.

Reynolds’ sword-swinging skills – seen in BLADE: TRINITY and X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE – will no doubt come in handy if he commits to the project (the fact that both those film were absolute rubbish is not really Reynolds’ fault). So what would fans of the franchise make of the GREEN LANTERN star, as their new hero? As always, we’d love to know! And yes we know GREEN LANTERN was rubbish also.

In 1987, David is a resident at ‘The Manor’ Drug Rehab Unit. Whilst there he is being kept addicted to heroin by a Clinical Director Chris Hunter whilst he has an affair with David’s wife. Chris eventually poisons David with contaminated heroin leaving him with horrendous facial disfigurement and chronic pain. David soon hangs himself. 25 years later and we follow Chris’s daughter Nicole as she tries to break into TV journalism. Her boyfriend (Adam) suggests they spend a night filming with friends in the now derelict Drug Rehab unit. There have been recent reports of paranormal goings-on and they plan to try and film them.

It soon becomes clear however that they are very much not alone…

This looks like bleeding petrifying stuff and it’s great to see the UK giving us an almighty scare. Directed and Written by Sean J Vincent THE ADDICTED doesn’t currently have a release date but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we love the look of it.

THN has the first collection of character posters, each giving us more than a hint of their individual personalities and motivations. Hillcoat previously gave us the brilliant, brutal Aussie western THE PROPOSITION, as well as punishing post-apocalyptic thriller THE ROAD. Singer and screenwriter Nick Cave, has adapted Bondurant’s best-seller. LAWLESS hits cinemas later this year

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES arrives in UK cinemas 20th July.

We reported on Stephen Amell (90210, VAMPIRE DIARIES) landing the lead role back in February, and he seems to be running with it. As you’ll gather from the trailer, it’s verrrrrrrrrrrrrry BATMAN BEGIN-y. Millionaire playboy goes out of town, grows a Kurt Russell-style beard, learns to be a badass, comes back to town, gains a super hero alter-ego, avenges his father, takes out goons. I’m surprised DC aren’t suing themselves.

Here’s the official synopsis:

A 27 year old reformed bad boy, who after having spent five years shipwrecked on a tiny, brutally dangerous island in the South China Sea, returns to town a different man. Or to be more specific, a tortured, thoughtful master of the bow with a ferocious determination to make a difference.

The pilot is co-written by Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim and is directed by the brilliantly named David Nutter, who helmed the pilots for SMALLVILLE, DARK ANGEL and TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES among others. It stars Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance.
