Paul's View: So, why can't I watch the Oscars again this year?
Posted in: Paul's View, Movie News

Okay, so it's Oscar night. The day has finally arrived, Sunday February 22nd, 2009. So, we're all geared up. We're ready to sit down and watch it right? The popcorn is popping, the beers are iced and we're just hours away. Yep, we're ready. Just as long as I don't devour all of that butter popcorn before 1am when the coverage kicks off.

Well, it is about 7pm on Sunday evening and I'm flicking through TVGuide.co.uk to see where the coverage is happening. Yes, we're in the UK, but more than willing to stay up late to see if Mickey Rourke finally gets what he deserves -- but wait... it's not on! What!!!!

For the third or fourth year running, the Academy Awards coverage has been awarded exclusively to Sky television in the UK. Now, this is great if you have Sky TV, but what if you don't subscribe? Now, I am not a luddite and yes I do have cable at home, but I don't subscribe to Sky Movies as I tend to have seen most movies by the time that they hit the channel -- in fact, the only time of year that I feel the need to have access to this channel is Oscar night. But wait, I can't just hit it up on a pay-per-view deal - no, I have to subscribe for the whole month to Sky Premiere or some shit. I remember those years that Jonathan Ross would present from the red carpet, but those days are long, long gone. I cannot believe that I will be missing it once again this year...

Time to take the beer out of the fridge, eat the popcorn and bugger off to bed.  At least I will be able to find out  who won what on GMTV in the morning when the parties are in full swing eh?

This just sucks ass. Come on BBC, ITV, more effort on the bid next year please!!!!

Paul's View: Zack and Miri Make A Porno
Posted in: Paul's View
Kevin Smith's latest film ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO hit cinema screens in the UK this past Friday. The film has one of those titles that literally says it all. Two old high-school friends, Zack (played by Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) find themselves behind on their rent, and bills coming out of their ears in the middle of winter in cold-ass Pittsburgh. So, to get rich quick, and get their water and electricity switched back on, the duo set about making their own 'porn' film. Hilarity ensues. Whenever I write that, hilarity rarely does, but this is a Kevin Smith movie, and I am perhaps one of the biggest Kevin Smith fans. I have seen all of the man's movies, multiple times, read all of his books (bar the comic books), and got all of his Q+A dvd's (which now totals three), so my anticipation and expection of ZACK AND MIRI was high. So, does it deliver CLERKS style or is it another JERSEY GIRL. Well, this film I would slot in between them both. It's a great low-budget comedy and a perfect vehicle for Rogen who plays stoner coffee barista Zack. Banks also shines as the cool best friend and room buddy Miri who you can't help but fall for. The same can be said about the movie. You can't help but like it. Between all of the dick and fart jokes, the gay porn jibes, the anal porn scenes, the hardcore sex action and the infamous dutch rudder explanation from Smith regular Jason Mewes (who yes, does get his piece out), is quite a touching love story. Believe it or not.

While it's not a film for the easily offended, my girlfriend, who hates the toilet humour of LITTLE BRITAIN and the like, couldn't help but smile in places, and I myself was uncontrollable following one gag towards the end of the movie - so much so that I missed most of the scene that followed through lack of oxygen due to laughing so hard.

Rogen fans will dif what's on offer. Smith fans have to go see this and folks who just was a good time with and open mind at the movies may want to check this out too. Not a perfect movie, but a film doesn't have to perfect to be laugh out loud hilarious. Another ample filmic-notch to that near perfect cinematic bedpost of flicks Mr Smith. We won't count JERSEY GIRL - even though I still kinda have a soft spot for that too.

Paul's View: Quantum of Solace
Posted in: Paul's View
Thought that I had better weigh in with my own, very quick, personal take on the latest big-screen exploits of Mr. 007. I finally managed to see the new James Bond last Sunday, with what I can only describe as the hangover from HELL! A day on the razz with my better half on Saturday definitely got the better of me. Anyway, I was still pleased to get to the screening of possibly one of the year's most anticipated flicks, QUANTUM OF SOLACE early in the afternoon.

We all know the story by now. Daniel Craig returns to our screens in the film which literally starts moments after the end of CASINO ROYALE. Bond is introduced bombing around the streets of Siena, Italy in a brand spanking new Aston Martin, which moments later he completely buggers up, in true 007 fash. It's a thrilling Bourne-esque car chase, which for me was the highlight of the entire movie. It's flash, it's brash, it's all shot with handheld cameras and there's a superb claustrophobic feel about it. My jaw dropped. Wow/ Unfortunately, it is, from that opening sequence, all down hill from there, and although the film is action-packed to the rafters, you can't avoid feeling left down by the end result. It's a short movie, running at about an hour and forty, and it seems, to me anyway, to be a film that has been rushed. There's very little in the way of story in between the action, which there is A LOT of. QoS delivers the explosions and fist fights in spades. All great action sequence, a stand-out moment being a gun battle at an outdoor theater production of Tosca in Austria, with director Marc Forster opting for a muted soundtrack of guns and shouting, instead favouring the music from the aforementioned production. Genius.

Now, I'm a massive fan of CASINO ROYALE, and the whole back-to-basics approach that the last two films have gone with. I love the 007 flicks in general, and I like Craig as Bond, and was really interested to see what 'art house' helmer Forster (FINDING NEVERLAND, MONSTER'S BALL) had come up with in this first true Bond sequel -- but I walked away feeling a little let down. Perhaps I set my bar to high and my expectation was too much - after all Bond has a lot to live up to in these days of the Bourne trilogy etc. This one wasn't up there. It's a worthy 007 movie, but certainly not the best.

Very much a film that's all guns and no glory, all bread without butter and all cock without balls. And what is it wuith that Alicia Keys and Jack White theme? Urgh!

The direction of the animal characters is brilliantly executed -- as good as you will find on any of Attenborough's efforts.
