Variety are reporting that Paramount Pictures and director Sam Raimi are to revive the Jack Ryan franchise. Raimi will develop and direct a series of movies based on the Tom Clancy character that has already featured in four seperate movies, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, PATRIOT GAMES, CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER and THE SUM OF ALL FEARS.

The trade reports that the new series of movies will see Ryan at a younger, more formative point in his career than previously depicted. One invention the studio is considering is to set the film in the present, with the action triggered by a global threat.

Raimi will start work on the movie just as soon as he completes his next horror movie DRAG ME TO HELL. The intention is to have the first Ryan movie ready for the summer of 2010.

Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck have all portrayed Ryan on screen in the past.
