Doubt, Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button were the top movies at the announcement of this year's Golden Globe nominations, each receiving five nods apiece.
Surprisingly, though, only two of those films -- Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button -- were up for the Best Picture - Drama award, as Doubt was shut out of the category in favor of The Reader, Revolutionary Road, and Slumdog Millionaire, each of which nabbed four nominations. Doubt, however, received the most acting nominations of any film, as all four of its primary stars -- Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis -- were recognized; the drama's fifth nomination was for Best Screenplay. Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button received nominations in the exact same five categories: Best Picture - Drama, Best Actor (Frank Langella and Brad Pitt, respectively), Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Score.
On the Comedy/Musical side, both Vicky Cristina Barcelona and In Bruges were the surprising favorites, with four and three nominations respectively, including Best Picture - Comedy/Musical. Other surprises this year included a strong showing for The Reader (four nominations), James Franco receiving a Best Actor - Comedy/Musical nod for Pineapple Express but no nomination for his acclaimed role in Milk, a lead actress mention for Vicky Cristina Barcelona's Rebecca Hall, and an out-of-left-field supporting actor nomination for Tom Cruise for his almost-unrecognizable turn as a profane studio executive in Tropic Thunder. The most notable snub of the awards was the shutout of Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia, as well as the poor showing for Milk, which received a lone mention for lead actor Sean Penn.
On the television side, HBO dominated once again, as its freshman series In Treatment led with five nominations, as did its telefilm Recount. Miniseries John Adams was close behind with four nods, while established hit Entourage received three mentions and and newcomer True Blood sucked up two nominations; both shows were nominated in their respective series categories. Thanks to the dearth of exciting new programming, the HBO shows were the only freshman series to merit inclusion. Last year's Best Drama series winner, Mad Men, was back again with three nominations.
And, there were no less than four double nominees this year: Meryl Streep, who received Best Actress nominations for Doubt and Mamma Mia!; Kate Winslet, who was recognized for both Revolutionary Road (lead actress) and The Reader (supporting actress); Ralph Fiennes, who scored a supporting actor film nomination for The Duchess and a lead TV actor nod for HBO film Bernard and Doris; and Tom Wilkinson, who nabbed mentions for two HBO projects, John Adams (supporting actor) and Recount (lead actor).
The Golden Globes will be handed out on Sunday, January 11th in a televised broadcast on NBC.
