Animes
have come a long way in the last 30 years, now populating just about every channel
there is with countless shows that are no longer the best kept secret in town.
But for "geezers" like me, shows like "Goldorak" and other
70's gem are still the best.
The
Hollywood Reporter brings comforting news for my ageing bones, announcing a feature
film in the works for "Star Blazers", also known as "Space Battle
Ship Yamato". The title generated three TV series plus a bunch of animated
films since the mid-70's, but seems to have come to a stop following legal battles
over the rights from the mid-90's to just a few years ago. According to the report,
Benderspink would be behind this new project, possibly a having resolved every
remaining legality.
The
original series, produced to low ratings in 1974 but pushed to the forefront following
the success of Star Wars in 1977, took place in the 22nd Century, as the Earth
is being devastated by an Alien Race using radiation. Surviving humans, living
in caves, come across a mysterious message that claims the existence of a cure
for the planet, and a way to fight off the assailants. Military forces manage
to convert the venerable Battleship Yamato into a spaceship (renamed Argo in the
English release), sending young heroes in the void to meet whoever sent the message,
and save humanity from certain doom.
No
production details could be found about the project, but just knowing it's out
there makes me feel a tad bit rejuvenated
