Actress
Wendy Richard has announced she is to leave the long-running BBC soap, Eastenders
after 21 years playing sour-faced Pauline Fowler.
Richard,
who is one of the last two original cast members, has been in the show since its
first airing in February 1985, but will leave Walford in a dramatic Christmas
storyline. During
her time on the soap, her character has featured in some of the most memorable
plots, including the jailing and death of husband Arthur and discovering her son
Mark was HIV positive. "I've
loved every minute of being part of this fantastic show, and will stay in touch
with the many friends I've made," she said. The
59-year-old actress, who has been awarded an MBE, first shot to fame as Miss Brahms
in the BBC sitcom, "Are You Being Served" and also appeared in two "Carry
On" films.
