Actress Wendy Richard has announced she is to leave the long-running BBC soap, Eastenders after 21 years playing sour-faced Pauline Fowler.

Richard, who is one of the last two original cast members, has been in the show since its first airing in February 1985, but will leave Walford in a dramatic Christmas storyline.

During her time on the soap, her character has featured in some of the most memorable plots, including the jailing and death of husband Arthur and discovering her son Mark was HIV positive.

"I've loved every minute of being part of this fantastic show, and will stay in touch with the many friends I've made," she said.

The 59-year-old actress, who has been awarded an MBE, first shot to fame as Miss Brahms in the BBC sitcom, "Are You Being Served" and also appeared in two "Carry On" films.
