More
news had been promised last week regarding a Richard Donner cut for Superman 1
& 2, including lost footage and what he originally envisioned. And it has
come, from the man itself talking to IGN Film Force about his career past and
future. Let me just say, Hurray! And Bummer!
"I'm
not doing it. They're doing it," said Donner of a re-cut for the two
movies. "Michael Thau, who used to be my assistant and is a good little
editor - [said that] there were so many requests to Warner Brothers to see my
cut that he went to them and they authorized it. He's been working for about four
or five months now getting all the negatives and cuts out of England. A lot of
it's been destroyed, a lot of it wasn't kept. But everything that he was able
to [get], he said it will probably be about 70 percent my footage."
The
director also mentioned being paid tribute to by the new Super-helmer, saying
"Brian (Singer), who did the new Superman, he says, "This is an homage
to you." Because it's got a lot of my own footage in it and everything. It
will be nice to see that too. I'm crazy about him."
While
on the subjects of recuts, most 80's child like yours truly really, but REALLY
want to know what the status is on the long-rumored "Goonies" sequel.
Heck, even Sean Astin approached Steven Spielberg right on the Oscar stage, when
the "Rings" cast and crew were honored last year, and told him how much
everyone wante dit to happen. This time, I'll only say a very loud BUMMER!
"We
tried really hard. Steven [Spielberg] and I, we pitched a couple of things to
them and, quite honestly, they weren't right. And we put it aside. If I could
ever find a really good handle on a screenplay for it, I'd go pitch it again,
because talking about [something] I'd want to see It's extraordinary. But
it's got to be right, or don't do it, because I couldn't believe that movie. It's
done to generations of kids what it's done."
