10 Other Survival Movies like “Escape Room” for Horror Fanatics

Horror movies rake in a lot of money, and for good reason: they’re the ultimate escapism. Movies like Escape Room provide us with the perfect opportunity to forget our real-life woes and focus on the trials and tribulations of other characters for a change. That survival horror also challenges us to solve complex mysteries is just another tick in the “for” column.

So you’ve watched Escape Room and you’re left wanting more? We have you covered. Here are 10 other survival movies that horror fanatics will love.

1. Saw

The Saw franchise appears on multiple “best horror” lists and for good reason: its attention to detail, twisted plots, and dedication to mystery makes it one of the best horror franchises in existence today.

The typical Saw movie sees strangers brought together as pawns in a deadly game of survival. There are twisted traps, specific instructions, and deadly lessons to be learned – like Breakout Games but with lives on the line. All in all, if you liked Escape Room, then the Saw series is likely to be a winner for you too.

2. Hush

From the same director behind the critically acclaimed Haunting of Hill House, Hush is one of the best survival thriller/horror movies of its kind.

Hush tells the story of a deaf writer who must suddenly fight for her life against a masked killer, all while unable to hear anything. As survival horrors go, it delivers ten-fold, forcing the main character to outwit her would-be killer in increasingly inventive and desperate ways.

3. Cube

Cube is a mainstay on lists like this one. It has drama, sci-fi elements, and a satisfyingly twisted plot making it the perfect follow up to Escape Room.

Cube tells the story of six strangers who find themselves in a deadly, seemingly endless maze full of hidden traps. Stellar acting and a brilliantly paced plot make for a satisfying horror mystery but it’s the concept itself that makes this one of the best horror movies on this list.

4. House on Haunted Hill

Released in 1959, House on Haunted Hill is the oldest movie on this list but that doesn’t lessen its impact. In fact, a lot of people look to House on Haunted Hill as the original example of the escape room, survival genre.

While there was a remake in 1999, we’d recommend the original. It features Vincent Price, a millionaire who offers $10,000 to five people who must agree to be locked in a large, spooky mansion overnight to receive their reward.

5. You’re Next

On the surface of it, You’re Next looks like every other slasher flick but this one has a twist: our main character has a history on a survivalist commune, making her exceedingly difficult to kill.

The resulting movie is something like Home Alone if you added serial killers and a whole lot of gratuitous violence. The similarities to Escape Room crop up in all the increasingly inventive ways the main character eludes the killers. If you’re a fan of survival horror then don’t miss this little gem.

6. The Game

The Game’s story centers around a wealthy banker who is given the opportunity to participate in a mysterious game. At first, the game seems pretty cool but the story quickly spirals resulting in an intense experience.

This is a true classic of the genre. For those wanting to experience the rush of Escape Room again, you can’t go past The Game.

7. The Belko Experiment

Released in 2016, The Belko Experiment explores a twisted social experiment in which employees of a corporation are trapped in their high-rise office building. Suddenly, a voice over the intercom informs them that only one will make it out alive.

The resulting kill-or-be-killed story is one of the best of its genre. If you liked Escape Room then The Belko Experiment is a great follow up.

8. Identity

2003 saw Identity hit cinemas and what a wind ride it was. The movie tells the story of 10 strangers who find themselves stranded at a secluded motel in the middle of a downpour.

As they get to know each other, they soon realize they’re being killed off one by one.
Stellar acting and a satisfyingly twisted plot make this movie one of the best of its genre. If you’re not afraid of a mystery then Identity is a great choice for your next movie night.

9. Vile

Vile tells the story of a group of people who awaken to find themselves prisoners in a mysterious house with no obvious means of escape. To make matters worse, they’re each outfitted with accouterments in the form of electronic devices attached to the base of their skulls.

A recording on a TV informs them of their task: in order to escape, they must hurt themselves and others. The more pain they’re in, the more chemicals are collected by the electronic devices. When the devices collect enough, the doors will open. Fail to complete the task in time, and everybody dies.

This is the quintessential escape room horror but be warned: the violence in this one isn’t for the squeamish.

10. Green Room

Green Room is a stellar movie, whether you’re into survival horror or not. It tells the story of a punk rock band who become trapped in a secluded venue after stumbling across a crime scene. For what they witnessed, the band itself become targets of violence from a gang of neo-nazis who want to cover their tracks.

Anton Yelchin and Patrick Stewart lead a stellar cast in this heart-pounding survival thriller. Just be warned, this one packs some pretty high-impact violence.
