From gifted filmmaker Josephine Decker, the transcendent and breathtakingly unique Madeline’s Madeline is released in cinemas on 10 May 2019 and available to stream exclusively on MUBI the same day.
Following on from its UK premiere at the 2018 BFI London Film Festival, the film stars Molly Parker (House of Cards), Miranda July (You And Me And Everyone We Know) and introduces audiences to remarkable new performer Helena Howard – already hailed as one of the most intriguing new faces to watch out for.
I caught the film last year and I can really recommend it. It’s very different from anything else you’ll see all year.
Here’s the synopsis.
Madeline (Helena Howard) has become an integral part of a prestigious physical theatre troupe. When the workshop’s ambitious director (Molly Parker) pushes the teenager to weave her rich interior world and troubled history with her mother (Miranda July) into their collective art, the lines between performance and reality begin to blur. The resulting battle between imagination and appropriation rips out of the rehearsal space and through all three women’s lives.
A bold new voice in American independent cinema, Josephine Decker is known for her experimental approach to storytelling, creating new forms of expression with each project. The award-winning Madeline’s Madeline is the third narrative feature film from the visionary director, who was recently named as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film.
Creating a whole new cinematic language for itself, Madeline’s Madeline is a bold and intoxicating whirlwind of both heartrending coming-of-age drama and an audacious avant-garde masterclass.
