I’ve personally discovered the joys and intense television series Luther in 2018, quite literally watching every single one of the sixteen episodes that exist across the four seasons so far. We are expecting the fifth series to land on New Year’s Day but there is talk that a Luther movie may indeed be in the works.
The Luther movie talk is reported by Variety at the launch of the upcoming fifth season of the hit show. Speaking in London, John Luther himself Idris Elba revealed that a feature-length film is in the works with writer-creator Neil Cross reportedly bashing out a screenplay.
“We are really advancing on getting a movie version [of the show] up on the screen,” Elba said. “Neil is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up.”
“It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther… essentially we just want to try to take it to a much bigger audience and scale, and perhaps international as well,” he added.

The cool news comes next as Elba revealed which kind of movies it may potentially share a tone with.
“‘Luther’ has all the ingredients to echo those classic [neo-noir] films of the 90s like ‘Seven’ and ‘Along Came a Spider,’ and I think what we would like to do is use that blueprint to create ‘Luther’ the film.”
This sounds epic, right? We agree that the series can quite easily fit that 90s crime movie mould and a Luther movie would certainly be very welcomed by fans across the world, including the one writing this.
We’ll bring you more as we get it, but do head over to Variety at the end of the link above for more on the potential Luther movie and the launch of the new season in London. For those who missed it, here’s the exciting season five trailer that was released online recently.
